Christchurch had a navigational rally on May 10, the first designed by me, and I got lots of tips for the future!
I dunno, you say "meet at 11", you expect people to meet at 11. But by 11.45, all teams had set off and the controllers set off to the final mark.
Five teams started, somehow only four turned up at the end. We still don’t know what happened to the fifth.
Although I had thought I had made the clues too easy, and suspected no-one would go astray, no-one actually stuck to the course the whole way through! The nearest to it were Paul and Marie DiSomma, driving a white MkI.
While they managed to stick fairly well to the course, that wasn’t the only requirement. There were questions to answer along the way, and the scoring was based on time and correct answers. Kirk Brocas and Ben Jones were surprised to find they had won, even though they’d gone way off course! They were narrowly ahead of Paul and Marie, by virtue of having gotten one extra question right.
Overall I think most people had a good time, and there were plenty of suggestions for next time. For the drivers, it seems that having a navigator knocks about 20 minutes off your time! We decided that the winners could write the next one, so Kirk and Ben, we’re looking forward to seeing what you come up with!
