Good old Dunedin... I woke up on Saturday morning to the sound of rain hitting the roof (this seems to be becoming a theme - all round the country!). Bummer!! After organising a drive for that morning and spending all that time chasing people up, I thought it was going to be a flop. Oh well, might as well get down there and see who might show up....
Well! I drove down to Chevron cars and there was one other car there. Graeme in his Mk1 Auto - Graeme had heard the community notice that I had put on the radio and decided to show up - excellent!! Within the next 10 mins, we had a total of 7 cars!! That’s a record for us - almost doubling our previous best of 4 cars! The interesting thing is that 4 of the cars had shown up for the first time - despite the weather... The vehicle line up was - Mk2 Turbos - Gerrard (Yellow) and Steve (Dark Green), Mk1 SC’s - Me (Midnight Blue) and Jason (Red) and Mk1 NAs - Darren (Red), Craig (White) and Graeme (Dark Green).
The original plan was to head out to Tairei Mouth and have a BBQ. I knew I should never have mentioned that word!! Well, I didn’t even bother putting the BBQ in the car and after looking at the sky in that direction we decided to head the completely opposite way - out to the peninsula!! (OK, we’ve already done that a few times!) There were quite a few road works on the main road but it gave everyone a good opportunity to catch up with each other and also turned a few heads of the ‘road workers’.
We’d planned to stop at a place called ‘Happy Hens’ for some photos. Steve identified a good photo spot but it meant driving up onto a nice grassy park. So, while no one was watching, we pulled all the 2’s up in a line and snapped some photos. Despite the temptation, luckily no one dropped their clutches in the grass so hopefully there won’t be any complaints!
Next stop was the albatross colony right out the end of the peninsula where we stopped for a drink and some eats. On the way there I was leading the pack and collected a bird in my front scoop, all Jason saw following me was a puff of feathers coming out from under my car - the bird seemed to want to come along for the ride! I’m pretty sure it wasn’t an albatross!!?
After a bit of a nosey round the souvenir shop, it was back into the cars - heading off our separate ways. I got left behind a bit and wondered why I never caught up again. Most of the other cars headed back a different way!
Anyway, it was good to meet some new people from around Dunedin, unfortunately Craig Watson has since sold his Mk1 (traded it for a VR4). He gave me an ’84-’87 manual that he had for it though, so if anyone around Dunedin would like to borrow that, let me know. A couple of days later, I learned that Daryl Munroe had spotted Craig’s ’84 in the yard and decided to purchase his blue ’84 a friend! (there’s only about 100 numbers different in their serials so they may have even been made on the same day!) So now he can concentrate on doing up the blue one for Club events.
Lately I’ve been trying to sort out getting onto Teretonga track, but unfortunately they are a bit hesitant on letting us use it - considering we are not affiliated to a motorsport club. I’m going to keep working at it though and see what we can do. At this stage, the next drive is pencilled in as 28th November.
