November Monthly Drive (1997)

As a regular club event we decided to hold a monthly run on the first Sunday of every month. Meeting at the top of Mt Eden in Auckland at 11:00 am we drive to a destination of one member’s choice along some of their favourite roads. The inaugural monthly club run was organised by Malcolm Cambridge and the destination was the Manukau Heads.

After meeting up at the summit of Mt Eden, a small group of us (3 AW11s and 3 SW20s) headed off for a catch-up rendezvous and lunch at Waiuku. Malcolm had photocopied road maps and had marked the route, but I still managed to take a wrong turning .... leading Ade astray as well (though I always thought she was the one who was leading me astray, but never mind). We eventually met up with the rest of the group in a large carpark at Waiuku where we had lunch. Apparently, 6 MR2s parked up in Waiuku is something the locals don’t often see because we seemed to attract a fair amount of attention.

After sampling the culinary delights of Waiuku’s local bakeries we headed off along some very interesting and windy roads to Grahams Bay, Manukau Heads. It was a beautifully sunny day and perfect weather for sitting around talking about MR2s ..... but then, what weather isn’t perfect for sitting around talking about MR2s?

We eventually decided to head back to Waiuku along those interesting roads (though, they’d be more interesting without the slower traffic) for a photo opportunity and then we made our own ways home. Ade, Malcolm, Brad and I all stopped on our way home at the Airport viewing area to watch planes landing.

All in all, an excellent drive. Good roads, a destination I’d never been to before, excellent weather, great company and the wonderful sight of 5 other MR2s snaking along ome winding roads.

Next monthly club run is on Sunday 4 January 1998. Meet at the top of Mt Eden at 11:00 am if you’re keen.

See ya there
