Wellington Monthly Outing

Sunday 23rd August 1998

I start with special thanks to Tony Thistoll a great organiser.

Welcome to Wellington, Sun, Sand, Surf and MR2’s. We gathered at the normal place (Perceys Reserve) at 11am. This was expected to be a low key outing as we have had a pretty good lashing of events away in the past months, also we were aware that several members were to be away this weekend. Nevertheless 10 cars turned up to enjoy the somewhat breezy day.

We had decided to take a quiet drive around the Wellington bays. Being a coastal city there is nothing like seafood ie kelp, sand and all the shit that comes off the beach and sea while cruising coastal roads. But hey we’re tough.

Anyway after a couple of hours of cursing and having picked up another MR2 owner out on a drive by himself, to get over the night before, who by the way wants to join the club. We proceeded to a coast side cafe called “The Brass Monkey” and sat down to a much-needed light meal and a drink of one’s choice.

After lunch and now with 11 cars we headed off to see Wellington’s wind turbine. When we arrived, the turbine was cranked to its max output due to the high winds and being on the top of a very high hill it was bloody cold.

We all stood there like a bunch of spoons moving our heads in a circular motion following the blades and talking idiotic gibberish as our teeth chattered with the cold.

Back to the car park and a mandatory photo session. Then it was time to go our separate ways. A few of us decided to cruise through town, but as usual we like to play follow the leader. Unfortunately the leader was one who was on his way home hence we lost everyone. In all it was another enjoyable outing for the club members. As usual I would like to thank everybody involved and to the hardworking committee.
