Sunday the 18th October, another beautiful Wellington day, which demanded that the T/tops be removed. All the usual members were there (Neil, I hope the Wife & Baby are doing well) and some new ones, Nolan and his wife in a 94 bright yellow NZ new N/A (glad to hear you are now official members), and Brian Attwell in his wife’s metallic Charcoal Supercharger MKI.
After the introductions we left for Masterton, and a quiet afternoon. The trip was reasonably uneventful, and we made Masterton by 12:15(ish). The problems began when we arrived in Masterton, at the first roundabout we came across, 4 cars made a right turn with the park in mind, the other 7 cars turned left and headed off for food (organised is not a word anyone could to describe us that day). Once everyone regrouped at the park, we preceded to spend several hours soaking up the sun.
This was until Jadeen and Melissa decided that they could not leave the park until they had a ride on the train. I must say that the video footage of this is priceless, and all those on the train (they know who they are) need a lot more practice at the old Mexican Wave, however their screams are perfectly adequate.
Around 3:00 the decision was made that it was time to get serious, and that a sports car club should not simple lie in the sun. So we packed up camp and headed for Martinborough, of course via the back roads. It was during this run that Neil proved to me conclusively that, YES a Turbo with octane boost can leave an N/A for dead. Thank you Neil for that most important lesson, however changing the subject slightly. I feel that I can safely say that everyone there enjoyed the little bit of throttle movement that went on, except for Jadine’s passenger. For Jadine was standing in for her partner Tony, who was busy at the Australian Indy Car Race. I will admit that she successfully filled in for Tony, as the test bed for MR2 endurance.
We finished the day quietly enjoying a beer, wine or spirit of our choice at the old Martinborough Pub, before heading home over that beautiful Rimutauka hill.
Now for the formalities of the day, PLONKER OF THE DAY AWARD. This month’s winner isn’t an official member and doesn’t have an MR2, but has been on most of the monthly runs with us. His act was that good that we agreed he deserves this, David had the simple job of filming the days events with Grants video-camera, yet he some how managed to film his leg for around 20mins on the trip up to Masterton. Sorry Dave we don’t have a trophy to present to you.
