5.25 are perfect. 6.0 and 6.5 fit also.

I have 5.25 in front and rear. Rear was tight.

Why 6x9?

Stock speakers are only 4" from memory. 5.25" will fit and so will 6" but you will have to do more work with 6.5" to make them fit with spacers and you will also possibly have the magnet clash with the window guide rail if the diameter is too big. I wouldn't think about fitting 6x9" in the doors. Some decent 5.25" componets would be a good upgrade.

Stock are 5.25 front, 3.5 rear.

Remember to have the window right down while fitting speakers.

Stock fronts are 4" and are mounted on a steel adapter plate. The stock Sub is 5.25".

The stock front door cutout is 130mm so this gives you a good guide on what is easy to fit.

Did spend quite a bit of time researching speakers a while ago because the stock system started playing up and was considering some major changes. Ended up fixing the stock power amps and it sounds good again. The premier sound system in the MR2 is the best factory set-up I have heard if it is running as it should (20Wx5).

Also when removing my fronts they were the same size as the 5.25 aftermarket speakers I was installing. Fronts were stock paper cones.

Some people in that thread say they are 5", which could be true. The mounting bracket may have added 1-2cm at the very most.

Get good components at teh front. Replace the 4" ones at the back

6X9s aren't that special. If you need the extra bass, get a 10" sub.

My mate runs pioneer 6x9s in appropriate small enclosed boxes overpowered with a huge jbl amp. (lol)

By overpowered, I mean that the speakers are rated to like 100rms or something but he's feeding them 150 iirc? more or less something like that.

They go hard, but 6x9s will be 6x9s....

Edit: spend $500 on your front components. More than all the sound quality you'll ever need.

I don't really feel the need for rears honestly... opinions differ.

If you have a good head unit, Try this ratio.

spend around 70% of what you want to spend on front components

and 30% on the rears, or even better, leave the stock small things in the rear alone and all in on fronts.

Amping speakers makes such a huge difference in sound.

Also underpowering speakers off HU power can also damage them after a while.

I use this forum for most of my ICE knowledge: http://forums.nzicemag.co.nz/
Some good buys to be made in the BSE also.
