I have noticed a lot of people getting very confused about the OEM SW20 brake caliper names, years and models from which they come from and what is the upgrade. This post is to help clear up that information the internet has provided.
The information about the 93+ Turbo brakes being the best OEM upgrade is true and also a myth. Especially when it comes to the NZ market of cars as predominantly our cars are JDM with some NZDM cars thrown in there. This information applies to both JDM and NZDM cars.
To clarify this below is a list of calipers, the cars they came on and the years they were installed on.
USDM cars are registered 1 year ahead of the real calendar year they were built. So a 91 USDM car was actually built in Japan in 1990. Keep this in mind when we are looking at the information.
We will start with the USDM cars then move onto the JDM cars.
DISCLAIMER: Any information contained in this document is to the best of my knowledge. Please consult your Toyota Dealer for exact part numbers for your specific car. I am not liable for any error in this document or any damage caused by following it. I know some JDM imports are registered as a 92 when really they are a 91.
TL;DR
In summary:
The USDM NA had single pot front calipers from 91-95 and used the same rotor as all G/G-Limited and GTJDM 89-91 cars.
The USDM NA had single pot rear calipers from 91-95 and used the same caliper and rotor as all G/G-Limited and GT JDM 89-91 cars.
The USDM Turbo had the same calipers and rotors from 91-92 as the 89-91 JDM G/G-Limited and GT cars.
The USDM Turbo had the same calipers and rotors from 93-95 as the 92-99 JDM G/G-Limited and GT/GT-S cars. Hence the 93+ Turbo brakes myth.
Brake pads are also something that is odd. Front brakes have unique pads for the caliper type but the rear brakes use the same pad for all years and models.
If you want to upgrade to the so called '93+Turbo' brakes you can find these brakes on all 92-99 JDM G/G-Limited and GT/GT-S cars that we have in NZ. No need to specifically look for a 92-99 GT/GT-S as the G/G-Limited had the same brakes.
Revisions of the JDM/NZ Australia/Europe/UK SW20 are as follows and are month specific. So there are overlaps in the revisions.
Revision 1 December 1989 to December 1991 89/12-91/12
Revision 2 December 1991 to November 1993 91/12-93/11
Revision 3 November 1993 to June 1996 93/11-96/06
Revision 4 June 1996 to December 1997 96/06-97/12
Revision 5 December 1997 to August 1999 97/12-99/08
EDIT: In addition to the JDM and USDM model of car the UK and Europe got a 3SFE powered version which it appears also had the same brakes as the JDM 3SGE and 3SGTE powered cars. This was only sold up until 1992 but still got the larger brake upgrade. Only the 5SFE version got the single pot front and kept the small brakes all the way through production.

Very good write up Phil, perhaps we should give you more tasks and mr2 myths to debunk... like snap oversteer... which is all on the driver.
Using the 89-91 brakes, with braided lines, EBC yellow brake pads, generic repco corolla spec non-slotted discs and a MC stopper, I still managed to bruise myself with the seatbelt at Manfield, due to the stopping power. The tyres I had on were super grippy. If you put on bigger brakes and you have crap tyres, don't expect to have better brakes.

Ha, snap oversteer....
Yes the 89-91 brakes do work well but can be prone to fade if hammered for too long. I mean, look at the mass difference in the rotors vs the early models. They will heat soak before the 92+ do. The caliper piston size is the same for both setups even though the master cylinder went from 7/8 to 15/16.

Yes so much about the decent tyres before a brake upgrade Clanfever.
People seem to think that bigger brakes will make you stop in a shorter distance. When in actual fact if you can already lock the wheels or cycle the ABS, you can’t stop any faster no matter how large a set of brakes you put on.
You have two contact points when braking. The pad and the rotor. Then the tyre and the ground. If you have locked the wheel or the ABS is flat out preventing wheel lock, the only thing that will pull you up quicker is a stickier tyre.
