Query regarding the SMT Transmission on the MRS

Post by mista2 »

Reposted from an email query I have recieved from a potential new MRS owner:
___________________________________________________________

I am considering buying an MRS and would like to contact a member who may have experience of the technical aspects of this car. I am particularly interest in any problems with the SMT trasnmission, clutch, and thrust bearing wear.

If I do buy one of these cars I will certainly apply for membership of your Club.

Thank you for your consideration,

Yours sincerely,

John Blount.

do they think they're buying a holden or something?? modern toyota's ( and old ones too ) nothing goes wrong. the MRS have no known issues, well common ones anyway. trans' are good, i would definatly go for a manual ( driver preference ).

Yeah, my preference would be the 6 speed manual also, but I had a drive of both a new SMT and a 5 speed when they came out (one NZ new, the other an import some months later)
I found the upshifts were a little slow and lazy, but I loved the downshifts on the SMT. Hated not having the safety of the clutch for getting going on gentle slopes, like out of gutters or over curbs etc.

I heard some of the early one were recalled for a software upgrade or something as some started failing to find reverse, but I can't find the reference now. Maybe I'm biased as the reason I'd buy ca car like an MR2 is to drive it myself. If I wanted a computer doing the shifting, I'd rather have a regular auto.

Can't say anything about problems with the SMT because I haven't had any myself, or heard of anyone else having any so far.
