Thanks muchly :)

I did the distributor & valve cover (?rocker cover) seals 3 years ago, would they fail again so fast? (or likely I didn't do them right the first time, pg 3 of this thread). Car has been really only been driving short trips to work and rarely blats down to Taupo.

The leak/muck is definitely in the distributor corner..

Quite a bit of oil. The correct way to do it would be a steam clean and work out exactly where it is coming from but that isn't always possible. You could use degreaser and hose, just be careful of the distrubitor and electronic stuff. Did you put sealer in the corners of the dictributor "hump" that the valve cover seals against?

Valve cover bolts come loose very easily.
Also the internal seal of the distributor can leak so that's harder to fix.

I don't believe I did... I oiled up the internal o-ring, and bought a second bolt (because it only had one holding it on!), but that was all I'm pretty sure.

Looks like I'm heading to Toyota tomorrow for replacement seals

Slightly random question, I have a spare manual box I bought off trademe.. 12ish years ago (when I had an auto g-limited that I planned to do a manual swap, but it never happened). My current MR2's 2nd gear is pretty rooted (nasty crunches at seemingly anything above idle speeds), it's been like this since I got it. I've not changed the box oil yet.

Is there any way to check how good the other box is outside of the car? I have no idea if it's an E54, but I would assume so. It's been stored up north wrapped in plastic for over a decade.

Not an easy way. You would need to strip it down. Marshall transmission could do it easily but it won't be particularly cheap.

It's most likely an S54.

Second gear synchro is very typical of these to wear out. Changing the gearbox oil and gear lever/linkage bushes can help it but won't solve it 100%.

So.. I think there is supposed to be something more here :D

Worked on filling the hole where the old broken aerial was - this used to be some kind of poorly fitting plastic, which looked like a wideneck bottletop tbh

Something like redline shockproof, spherical bushes (https://primemr2.com/products/spherical ... e-bushings), and square bushing? (https://twosrus.com/catalog/product_inf ... cts_id=950)

S54s don't use what the E153 uses. It's more like a thin oil such as Castrol VMX 80W. The square bush can be rotated so it has new surfaces to contact the arms but the spherical bushes are definitely the go!
