Al's first non turbo. 1992 G Limited

Post by Alsw20 »

I was having a bit of FOMO about a year ago and bought a '92 G Limited. Probably paid too much money for it cos it needed a little work here and there. It was comfortably south of $9000 but its going to need a few thousand to bring it up to my standard. It had sub 200,000km so that was a bonus.

I picked it up in Wellington but it spent 18 years of it's New Zealand life in the South Island, specifically Nelson and Blenheim.

Got it home and realised daily driving this would be much harder than it was 20 years ago when I got my first turbo. Getting in and out has become harder? so I ended up getting another car to daily drive.

Been slowly tidying up a few bits and pieces. Picked up some good condition cloth seats as mine had rips, tears and cigarette burns in them so swapped them over. Put my Momo Montecarlo 350mm steering wheel in and my gen5 sw20 red stitched shift knob.

Got a new passenger door tweeter cover as the existing one had broken tabs and was hiding in the door panel? Fitted some rear Rockford Fosgate 3.5" coaxial speakers because a previous owner had removed the old speakers. Picked up an almost period correct double din JDM Alpine stereo. Turns out the CD player won't read so I'll take that to a local outfit to sort out. Also picked up an Alpine 12 disc stacker for the boot and have an old Parrot Bluetooth kit that I can use to stream Bluetooth audio and have hands free calling. Can hide the display behind the ashtray and the mic behind the dash.

My car was missing the second woofer box from behind the passenger seat so got one off a club member and found the Rockford Fosgate 5.25" woofers fit perfectly into the factory spots and utilise the factory screw holes. I've got a Taramps mini two channel amp that I can run high level inputs off the front speaker channels, it's good for about 40 watts RMS x 2. Will lowpass that at 150hz.

Here it is after wash.

The jobs to do list is as follows:

Replace drivers window reg, currently broken.
Fix rattly passenger mirror
Fit amp, woofers and low pass crossovers
Fit Parrot Bluetooth
Fit 12 disc stacker in boot
Fit LED bulbs to cluster
Replace dash and clean out vent system. Rattly and spews out foam.
Replace antenna rod/cord
Repaint sills, rear grille, headlight surrounds and rear caps gloss black
Paint rear muffler silver and polish exhaust tips
Refit stock intake
Replace exterior window mouldings

Good one mate, they are great little cars. Hope you enjoy it as much as we do (for now). We bought this for my daughter who is going to Otago Uni next year and she will get the car around October next year.

The G handles so nicely and very sure in the steering :D :D

Because Racecar? It has Blitz Coilovers, Enkei race wheels and Bridgestone RE71R tyres. It's a pointy car for sure but the poor little 1NZ-FXE engine needs more go. Maybe it's just the super smooth CVT gearbox that makes it feel different.

Importing the car directly, saved me a bit of money and also managed to get all those added goodies on it.

I do agree it needs a bit more oomph, but it's for the daughter so it'll have to do for now.

For more power, we'll just have drive either the Subi or the MR2 once that's completed :D

Thanks 8)

Shame it's not turbo. I might end up tidying this one up and moving it on then look for a 3rd gen turbo. As much as I love the SW, the 2nd gen 3sge isn't exactly very inspiring and doesn't like the revs like all my old 4AGE Corollas.

Pulled the Alpine 3 disc out as the changer wasn’t working and dropped that off for repair.

Fitted my Alpine IVA-D310E DVD/CD player. It’s a single DIN pop out similar to Paul Walker’s unit in the OG FF film. Not quite period correct as this is probably 2003 where the old 3 disc is probably 1996/1997.

I’ve got a rare old piece of Alpine kit (KCA-410C) that allows you to hook up two CD changers and two AUX inputs to your single Ai Net port. Currently have the 12 disc changer plugged in and I’m awaiting a generic Bluetooth adapter/microphone with RCAs that will go into one of the AUX ports.

Your need for 4AGE reviness could be satisfied by the post I've just put up in the MR2's for sale section.....

I've always wondered how a 4AGE would go in an SW. Especially one that makes a decent amount more power than stock. Would probably turn it into a mid engined RX8. No torque, all the revs.
