Placing the windage tray and oil pickup onto the GEN4 3SGTE is a little bit tricky. The tray and pick up intertwine a little bit. The oil pick up goes directly over the oil pump and gasket while the windage tray goes over it where the studs are but the support brace on the oil pick up goes over the windage tray. As seen in image 2, 3 and 4. Test fit prior to gasket placement.

Oil pickup gasket to oil pump on the GEN4 3SGTE. The nuts here are 9Nm but the bolts for the windage tray are 6.5Nm.

Final placement and torqueing of nuts and bolts for the GEN4 3SGTE windage tray and oil pickup. 9Nm for the nuts and 6.5Nm for the bolts. That's it for tonight. Slow and steady progress.

The sealant I will be using for the GEN4 3SGTE is Wurth Super RTV Silicone in black. This is what Toyota New Zealand uses instead of Toyotas own product.

I've cut the nozzle to be 4mm wide as per the recommendation in the service manual and did a test run of a bead on paper. Very easy to use. You stop squeezing the trigger and it stops coming out of the nozzle.

Preparing the block and oil pump of the GEN4 3SGTE for the upper sump pan to go on. For some reason I only took a photo with one O ring in place. There are definitely two on there.

Preparing the upper sump to go onto the GEN4 3SGTE. You'll notice the grooves around the sealing surface have different end directions. Most point in but some point out. This indicates where the sealant is meant to go. As per the service manual. This is the GEN3 3S manual (in the link below) so a slightly different sump shape vs the GEN4 due to the crank position sensor but it follows the same pattern.

Wurth RTV applied to the upper sump of the GEN4 3SGTE. Not an amazing work of art but it will do the job.

You have 5 minutes max to apply the sealant and place the sump on the engine. Otherwise you have to remove it all and do it again.

Nuts and bolts placed around GEN4 3SGTE upper sump pan. There are 4 different types of fixings all with different torque settings. You can see them layed out in position on the bench and also the service manual section on this procedure.

After torqueing down the fixings for the upper sump of the GEN4 3SGTE the sealant is pushed out more. I may have used a little bit much in a few spots but I'm sure it won't leak. The bits I can see inside the engine didn't squeeze out anymore than the factory applied sealant.

The next step is to put the lower sump pan on the GEN4 3SGTE. Get the hardware ready, install the 2 studs onto the upper sump so you can locate the pan properly when placing it.

Apply sealant to the sump pan of the GEN4 3SGTE in the same fashion as the upper sump to block. 4-5mm wide bead. Flip it over and place it on the engine over the 2 locating studs.

Place the fixing hardware on to the GEN4 3SGTE sump pan and torque them down to 6.5Nm. Both the nuts and bolts are the same here.

Last for tonight is the GEN4 3SGTE oil pressure regulator. This must be installed with a new O ring with a little bit of clean oil and I've put in a new washer for the main spring retainer bolt. It's important to install the tab on one of the bolts facing down so that the relief hole in the regulator body corresponds with the machined area of the upper sump to let oil out and back into the sump.

Torque the 2 M8 bolts to 18Nm. I'm not sure what the big bolt is but it's 22mm and an aluminium washer so a good amount was applied to seat the new washer.

Now that I have a new bolt seal for the GEN4 3SGTE oil cooler I can install that part along with a new O ring.

Part numbers are shown elsewhere in the build.
Torque for this large 24mm bolt is 59Nm. As my 3/8" socket set only goes to 22mm I had to bump up to my 1/2" sockets and a 1/2" torque wrench which I had to borrow.
