Last shots of the inside of the GEN4 3SGTE before it gets closed up for good. CP Carrillo pistons, nicely honed bores, flat head and block mating surface. Give it wipe down with white spirits and move onto the next thing, the head gasket placement!

A fresh set of new head bolts for the GEN4 3SGTE. Cleaned up the old washers.
Apply oil to the threads and under the head.
You have to insert the washer prior to fitting the bolt. There isn't much room in the casting, just enough for the bolt head to pass through.

This little guy saw me in the garage doing work on the engine so he pulled out his own tool kit to help. I then set the torque wrench to 30Nm so he could help me start the torqueing sequence. I helped him turn the bolts and make the click. He loved hearing and feeling the wrench go click. Click he said, each time we got the torque value.

I then did the final pass at 49Nm.

Once the GEN4 3SGTE head bolts are torqued to 49Nm you mark the head of the bolt with a paint pen and then proceed to turn the bolts another 90 degrees for the final setting.
The head is finally on!!

Installing the new seal to the cam position sensor on the GEN4 3SGTE. This seal was created by @driftmotion1 (on instagram) in the last few years for the JZ engines but works with the 3S sensors including the 3SGE Redtop, greytop (1x seals) and the Blacktop (2x seals).
The OEM seal leaks oil to inside the sensor and through the plug all the way through the wiring harness. If there wasn't a junction block you'd have oil in your ECU.
Redline assembly lube on the GEN4 3SGTE cams. Place the cam on the head with the No.1 cam lobes facing outwards.
The intake cam has the arm on the back for the cam position sensor.

Lubing up the GEN4 3SGTE cam caps ready for installation on the cams. These each have a specific position and a direction. Each one is stamped with E for Exhaust and I for Intake with a number denoting the position in the head and an arrow facing forwards. 2-5 plus the front cap in position 1 at the front of the head.

Curiously the GEN4 3SGTE head has a machined position where the previous generations had provisions for the distributor. This has coil on plug so no need for this machined spot in the head. The exhaust cam journals are only machined enough for what is needed and nothing outside of the valve cover.
So there is a plastic plug to cover the hole and seal the oil in with a flat spot for the valve cover gasket. I took the old one out thinking it was rubber but no need to remove it or order a new one. I ordered a new one before I knew this. So in it goes with some Wurth RTV. Placed and then cleaned up the excess RTV for a flat surface for the valve cover seal.

Placing the internal cam caps on the intake cam shaft of the GEN4 3SGTE. The cam shaft sits up due to the valve springs. Once you start to tighten the caps in the correct sequence the valves start to open on some cylinders.

The front cam caps on the GEN4 3SGTE require some sealant on the edges to prevent oil leaks. This is outlined in the service manual.
Placing the bolts into the cam caps prior to bolting them down. Why are the front ones silver and the internal ones black? Because you can see the front ones for a brief moment but not the internal ones so I plated them but only cleaned and oiled the others.
