Obituary Paul Green

Post by Curly »

Is is with heavy heart that I announce the passing of Paul Green on 21 March 2012 at The Otago Community Hospice.

Paul’s member number was 2004.553. He was known on the forum as baldockboy
He had been an active member of our Club since 2004.

Paul and Hilary were members, originally in Auckland and latterly in Otago when they moved to Palmerston (south) to make their home, after their retirement.

Paul was our Merchandising Officer and Committee member until ill health changed his life. He was very enthusiastic and did a great job.

I remember the first time I met Paul and Hilary. April 2006. Easter. It was the occasion of the Otago area organised 45th Parallel run which entailed a run from Oamaru to Milford Sounds. We all gathered at Oamaru and these two strangers turned up in their distinctive red and white shirts. They had made the long trip from Auckland, in their red SW20, to join us and see the sights of the lower south island.

We all introduced ourselves and have been friends every since.

We will miss Paul and his keen sense of humour.

Our thoughts go out to Hilary and family and we offer our condolances.

RIP Paul

Dam didn't realise this happened! It was only a few weeks ago when I passed through Parmelston and thought about popping in for a cup of tea.
My condolences go out to his family.

There were two MR2s at the funeral at the funeral yesterday in Warkworth...

It was, at times sad, and at times hilarious. (Which is not surprising, knowing Paul! He could be exasperating and very funny.) I'll include quotes from the funeral leaflet in italics:

There are holes in the sky, where the rain gets in,
but they're ever so small, that's why the rain is thin. (Spike Milligan)

Actually, it was a beautiful day, yesterday. So much so that was "targa tops off" weather to enjoy the tourist route north.

Paul & Hilary's daughter, Nicola, officiated. She was magnificent, regaling us with stories from his very full (albeit, sadly truncated) life, and only occasionally cracking emotionally. My favourite was Paul's conversation with his hero, Graham Hill, at a racetrack, while Graham was driving by in his race car. Graham said, "Get out of the bl**dy way!"

The man who invented the zip fastener today was honoured with a lifetime peerage... He will now be known as the Lord of the flies. (The Two Ronnies)

After several little stories from various people, and a slide show, we toasted Paul with a shot of whiskey and departed to the strains of "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life".

Hilary was in a pretty good state. She had Paul's ashes in an urn with his photo on the front, so she could put it on the mantelpiece -- that way she could be angry with him, whenever the need arose!

We've just heard that in the English Channel, a ship carrying red paint has collided with a ship carrying purple paint. It is believed that both crews have been marooned. (The Two Ronnies)

Whenever we see a 1953 Morris Minor convertible with a split windscreen (our default answer in pub quizzes when we didn't have a good answer), we will think of Paul!
